Administration Staff

Susan Rajala - Principal

Mrs. Rajala is the Principal at Broomfield Academy and works with administration, staff, students and families. She has been with Broomfield Academy/Meritor Academy since 2001 and has taught grades 3, 4, and 5. Prior to that, she was a Center Director of a Sylvan Learning Center. In addition, she has taught grades 4, 5, and 7 in the Austin Independent School District in Austin, Texas.

She is currently licensed to teach elementary grades in Colorado and Texas. Susan and her husband were both born in the mid-west and enjoy visiting their families and friends in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota.

When away from school, Susan enjoys reading, cooking and baking, crafting and spending time with family and friends. She especially enjoys visits and communication with her former Broomfield Academy students and families.

Anica McFarlane - Director Admissions and Administration

Anica McFarlane is the Director of Admissions and Administration at Broomfield Academy. She is responsible for working with families to schedule tours, prepare contracts and for the processing of financial transactions. She also handles a wide variety of other coordination and scheduling activities – as well as doing all-around air traffic control. She supports the principal and staff in a variety of ways, including scheduling, payroll, accounting, reporting and procurement.

She earned her BA in Business from Queens College in Charlotte, NC. She loves to read, travel, entertain friends and family. She wishes she could ride a Harley and spends time with her husband and daughter.

Michele Horn - Director of Early Childhood

Mrs. Horn is Director for Broomfield Academy's licensed Early Childhood program. Mrs. Horn attended Front Range Community Collage and Metro State College where she majored in elementary education She is currently certified by the State of Colorado as a Director for large child care centers.

Her teaching experience includes working with children of various ages and adults for a span of over 20 years.

Prior to teaching at Broomfield Academy, she taught home school for her three children for seven years and has also worked for Apex Park and Recreation District in Early Childhood Education, as well as teaching adult technology classes for the Community Recreation Center.

Mrs. Horn is a Colorado native and when not at work, she enjoys crafts, gardening and cooking, She also enjoys spending time with her family.

Teaching Staff

Jessica Lord, Explorers

Jessica Lord teaches the Explorer's 3 yr and 4 yr old class at Broomfield Academy. Ms. Lord is currently working toward her Bachelors' degree in Early Childhood Education. She is finishing up at Community College of Denver and then transfer to Metro. Ms. Lord has several years' experience working in early childhood education and development.

She recently moved to Colorado from Portland, Oregon. In her free time, Ms. Lord enjoys exploring the outdoors with her golden retriever, traveling, and tasting new and exotic foods.

Raynell Dodson, Junior Kindergarten

Raynell Dodson teachers Junior Kindergarten. She has worked in early childhood education for 12 years in a many capacities. Early childhood education has always been her passion and joy. She is currently working on her Director Certificate in Early Education.

She lives in Firestone with her husband and 13 year old daughter. In her free time, she loves to spend time with her extended family. She also loves to have "movie nights" with daughter, niece and nephew. When not watching movies, she can found outside playing softball, camping, fishing, or just enjoying the beautiful Colorado weather on her porch. During football season, you will find her on the couch watching the Denver Broncos playing. GO BRONCOS!!

Kyla Gottardo, Kindergarten & 1st Grade

Mrs. Gottardo teaches Jr. Kindergarten at Broomfield Academy. She has experience teaching preschool, kindergarten and first grade. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Colorado with an emphasis in language differentiation.

As a teacher, she is dedicated to assuring that students are successful in every aspect of their learning. Mrs. Gottardo has taught diverse groups of students, including children who speak English as a second language.

In her spare time, Mrs. Gottardo enjoys hiking, camping, barbecuing and softball.

Rebekah Hallman, 2nd Grade

Rebekah Hallman teaches second grade at Broomfield Academy. In the past, she has also taught junior kindergarten and student taught in third grade. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Kansas Wesleyan University, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. While there, she also ran cross country and track for the University. Several of her family members have been teachers and that has certainly influenced her teaching. She knows that every student can be successful and is there to guide each student to their greatest potential.

She grew up in Berthoud, Colorado and still lives near the area today. When she's not in the classroom, you can find her running, hiking on the trails, playing card games, or baking sweets.

Terri Certain, 3rd Grade

Terri Certain teaches third grade and the summer elementary prep class at Broomfield Academy. She has over twenty years of experience teaching preschool and kindergarten. She holds her Colorado teachers license with endorsements in both Elementary and Early Childhood Education as well as her Director's License and CDA.

Terri and her husband have been married for 29 years and have raised three daughters. Terri enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren, gardening, baking, reading, sewing, hiking, and camping.

Farren Wyner, 4th Grade

Farren Wyner teaches fourth grade. She holds a B.A. in Journalism with a minor in French from Indiana University and Elementary Education credentials through the University of San Diego. She has 13 years of elementary school teaching experience in California and Colorado. Her personal teaching style is to nurture the unique gifts in every child and to make learning enjoyable, creative and engaging.

Farren enjoys vegetable gardening, reading, competitive tennis, cooking healthy meals, playing with her dog and two cats, and hiking with her family. Her heroes are tennis great Serena Williams and former First Lady and activist Eleanor Roosevelt. She loves learning about other cultures and sincerely believes that many essential life lessons can be learned from Star Wars and The Little Prince.

Davis Turner, 5th & 6th Grade

Davis Turner graduated from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo Michigan, with a B.S. in Elementary Education.  During his coursework, Davis focused on growth and development as well as pedagogy. Working with a variety of different populations, cultures, and values, he emerged a much more compassionate teacher.

He moved to Durango, Colorado in the summer of 2010 and worked for Colvig Silver Camps where he supervised multinational students ages 9 to 13. He worked on making the young individuals aware of their environment and how it relates to education and self-growth. Davis moved to Portland, Oregon for the winter and continued his work with education.

Davis, his wife Tessa, and their pets soon returned to Colorado and now reside in Westminster, where they continue to enjoy their natural surroundings and activities. Davis is an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoys snowboarding, mountain biking, backpacking, hiking, hockey, and golf. Davis is looking forward to his 5th year at Broomfield Academy.


Richard Weeks, 5th & 6th Grade Math

Richard Weeks teaches fifth and sixth grade math. Proud of his forty-eight years in education, he has considerable experience teaching math, science and psychology. He has coached many team sports and has worked in a variety of school administration and counseling positions. Mr. Weeks created and directed the K-12 counseling program for Colorado Academy in 1979. From 1981-1989, he served as Director of College Placement and Dean of Students at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. In 1989, he was the Dean of Students and Assistant Head of School at Alexander Dawson School. In 1995, Mr. Weeks co-founded the George L. Bridge School, a middle school and high school and for sixteen years, he served as Head of School.

Mr. Weeks holds a BS in Industrial Management from Clarkson University, an MA in School Administration and Supervision from the University of Denver, and an Education Specialist degree in Counseling from the University of Colorado.

Mr. Weeks works with his students to create a strong sense of community that is based on mutual respect and trust. He works to help students develop resiliency, self-confidence and strong problem solving skills and believes that these characteristics, combined with individualizing instruction, are keys to building a safe and successful learning environment. Mr. Weeks enjoys being outdoors, working on his small farm, riding his road bike and gardening with his wife.


Specialty Teaching Staff

Khristy Dean - Art

Khristina Dean enjoys introducing students to art and artists from around the world. Mrs. Dean graduated from Colorado State University with a B.A. in Art History and Minor in Interior Design. She has been teaching at the elementary level for over 20 years. This includes stints in Southern California as a 1st, 2nd, and 7th grade teacher and at several elementary schools here in Colorado.

As one of the 'original' teachers at Broomfield Academy, she switched to Art full time. Her desire is to combine her love of art and teaching into a class that will expose children to the world of art. A lifelong learner, Mrs. Dean continues to take classes and bring the latest techniques to her classroom.

Mrs. Dean is creative outside the classroom and enjoys time in her private studio. Khristina lives in Westminster with her husband and daughter. She values her time with family and enjoys traveling the world.

Marie Folmar - Technology, Camp Supervisor

Marie Folmar teaches Technology at Broomfield Academy. Mrs. Folmar graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor's degree in Language Arts and a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction.

In her free time, Mrs. Folmar enjoys spending time with her husband and three children. She enjoys camping, visiting National Parks, reading, and doing crafts.

Sarah Kleinsteiber - Music 4th - 6th Grade

Sarah Kleinsteiber is the music, band and drama teacher at Broomfield Academy. The kids call her "Miss K." She received her bachelor's degree in Music Education from Coe College in Iowa and is working to complete her master's degree in music at the University of Denver Lamont School of Music.

She plays trumpet professionally and has performed with symphony orchestras, brass quintets and jazz ensembles in the Denver area and elsewhere. She currently plays trumpet in the big band "William and the Romantics." She also teaches private trumpet, piano, voice, recorder, Music History and Music Theory.

Miss K enjoys traveling, running, dancing and watching sports, especially the Green Bay Packers. She loves directing the Broomfield Academy school musicals and teaching students songs and dances from around the world. Miss K. also started the Broomfield Academy Capoeira program and conducts and teaches the students in the Broomfield Academy Band program.

Kateryna Perry - Swim Instructor

Kateryna Perry, "Ms. Kat", is one of our swimming instructors / coaches. Ms. Kat has taught swimming at Broomfield Academy for five years.

She grew up in the Ukraine, where she was a competitive swimmer on the National Ukrainian swim team. She received her Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and Swimming in the Ukraine. She also holds a Master Degree in Sport Psychology.

After moving to the United States, Ms. Kat obtained and keeps current various certifications in the swimming field, including Red Cross, YMCA, Health and Safety Institute. When not teaching at Broomfield Academy, Ms. Kat works part time as shift lead / head lifeguard at local pools of Arvada.

Ms. Kat speaks Russian, Ukrainian and English. She likes to spend her free time hiking, doing yoga or reading.

Michael Richard - Spanish, Extended Day

Michael Richard has taught Spanish to the Middle School students through Explorers classes. He holds a B.A. in Spanish from the University of Wyoming. He also works as support in various classrooms, helping with math, language arts and other subjects. You may also see him working in the lunch room, at recess, or in the extended day program.

Mr. Richard enjoys both working and playing with students of all ages. "One of the perks to having so many different roles, is that I get to work with just about every student at the school at some point each week."

After his school day ends at Broomfield Academy, he hustles off to Monarch High School where he volunteers as one of the head coaches of Monarch's Ultimate Frisbee team. Mr. Richard is very passionate about the sport of Ultimate Frisbee. "Ultimate is an amazing sport. It is a fun and exciting, fast-paced game that also holds the players to the highest standards of respect and sportsmanship." Besides Ultimate Frisbee, Mr. Richard enjoys many other activities including basketball, climbing, backpacking, and woodworking. And you may catch him riding his bike every once in a while.

Emily Selman - Music Explorers - 3rd Grade

Emily Selman has worked for three years at Broomfield Academy. She received her Master's degree in Music Education and a Kodály Certification from Colorado State University in 2015. Her Bachelor's degree is in Music Education with a trombone emphasis from Ithaca College, 2006.

In addition to general music classes, she has taught concert band, jazz band, brass sectionals, recorder club, guitar club, songwriting, and private lessons throughout Colorado. She performs regularly as a member of the Colorado Wind Ensemble, the William and the Romantics Big Band, and the Mile High Brass Quintet. When not making music, Emily enjoys swing dancing, hiking, camping, and arts and crafts.

Julie Shelley - Health & Fitness

Julie Shelley is the Physical Education teacher at Broomfield Academy. She graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She has previously taught Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten and substitute taught for several years. For the past several years Mrs. Julie Shelley has enjoyed teaching Physical Education to Broomfield Academy students, sharing her love of athletics, teamwork and leadership with others.

Sheryl Tarkenton - Extended Day

Sheryl Tarkenton has worked in our Extended Day program since 2014. She has been a BVSD para educator for over 11 years. She has her Early Childhood Education Certificate as well as Pyramid Plus Training.

She lives in Broomfield with her husband of 25 years. She has 4 boys from age 12 to 21 and one cat. She loves children, animals, traveling and gardening.

Cord Van Wert - Spanish

Cord Van Wert teaches Spanish at Broomfield Academy. He holds a B.A. in Spanish with a minor in French and a K-12 teaching license with an endorsement in Spanish from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado. He has lived in France, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and, most recently Chile, where he taught English to children and adults for two years.

Before teaching at Broomfield Academy, Mr. Van Wert taught Spanish, French, and exploring world cultures at Sagewood Middle School in Douglas County.

Cord was born in Denver and is an avid sports fan, always supporting the local teams. He is passionate about learning languages and travelling and enjoys snowboarding, kayaking, hiking and backpacking in his free time.

Elizabeth Warren - Swim Instructor

Elizabeth Warren teaches swimming and water safety at Broomfield Academy's on-site pool. As a swimming instructor, swim coach, and lifeguard, she has taught and coached students of all ages and abilities throughout Colorado since 2006.

She is American Red Cross water safety instructor and lifeguard certified. With her passion for swimming, she places safety first while inspiring students to be confident and strong swimmers. Elizabeth also has a certification in Early Childhood Education.

In her spare time, she can be found hiking, running, and spending time in the Colorado mountains.
