Broomfield Academy Curriculum

Broomfield Academy’s mission is to develop learners through the discovery of individual talents, the development of skills, the experiences of enriching opportunities, the expression of interests, strengths and talents. Lessons are developed to create cross-curricular connections. Broomfield Academy provides a good balance of academic rigor while fostering individual curiosity.  Students learn responsibility and accountability.

READING
Our reading goal is that each student develop thoughtful comprehension along with an appreciation of written expression. Developing both a student who is learning to read and a student who is reading to learn are equally as important. Reading is not a subject but a much needed skill for success and is integrated through our subject areas.
WRITING
Our students value the writing process as a shared learning experience. An important mode of communication, writing encourages the use of critical thinking and questioning skills, as well as the exploration of individual creative expression. Literature is used as a model for analyzing and discussing writing. Students develop diverse writing assignments that extend throughout our curriculum.
MATH
Critical thinking and solving of real world problems is heavily emphasized in our math program. Through observations and assessments, teachers modify programs that meet the individual needs of students.
SCIENCE
Students gain essential skills and knowledge as they view the world around them as scientists - through questioning, problem solving, and researching. Communicating ideas and presenting concepts to peers are major elements in our science program.
SOCIAL STUDIES
As students progress from learning about their community, state, region, country, continent, they become global learners, studying events and time periods of history and comparing and contrasting governments.
WORLD LANGUAGE
Bringing language to students through the study of culture, music, art, and play. Learning new languages increases cognitive ability, self-esteem, as well as deepening cultural and global awareness.
MUSIC
Research has shown that music instruction increases children's mental functioning. Expressiveness, joy, and cooperation are incorporated into our hands-on music program.
ART
The students learn about artists, styles, techniques, history and culture. Through hands-on-projects, the students explore creativity and put knowledge into practice. This 'learn and create' method allows students to try many different types of art and to explore various artistic outlets.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION/HEALTH and FITNESS
Our goal is to provide enjoyable and engaging activities that teach movement and behavior skills, promote increased physical fitness, and help students develop a healthy, active lifestyle that can be maintained for life.
SWIMMING
While learning to swim, students will also learn about water safety, play games, and work on swim team readiness. We also offer private and group lessons outside of the school day to the community.
TECHNOLOGY
Students work with hands-on education using LEGO WeDo, Mindstorm robotics, as well as learning keyboarding, MS Office, and coding. They also have the opportunity to experience interactive SmartBoards and document cameras.
